How to price a cake (the formula)

Every profitable cake price uses the same building blocks: ingredients + labour + overheads + margin. Miss any one and you're baking for free — or worse, paying for the privilege. Here's what most UK home bakers get wrong:

  • Labour isn't optional. If you spend 4 hours and only charge £5/hour, you've hired yourself at less than minimum wage. Pay yourself at least £15–£30/hour.
  • Overheads are real. Gas, electricity, packaging, insurance, mileage, website — add roughly 10–20% on top of ingredients + labour.
  • Margin ≠ markup. A 30% margin means the cake sells for cost ÷ 0.7, not cost × 1.3. This calculator does that for you.

What UK cake makers typically charge

For reference, in the UK a two-tier celebration cake for 30 usually lands between £120 and £220 depending on decoration. Wedding cakes start around £350 and rise sharply for sugar-flower and fondant work. Cupcakes are typically £2.50–£4.50 each.
